Immersive Waters, or Notes Towards a Genealogy of Water Art

As a long-standing and vital element in the production of visual art, water had been employed variously—as subject, liquid base for pigments, and fundamental to the cleaning and maintenance of tools—from time immemorial through the mid twentieth century. Today, the use of water as an artistic material in the production of different forms of sculpture, performance, and installation art is so common that it would be all but impossible to systemically track its use. In the interim—that is, during the latter half of the twentieth century, coincident with dramatic ecological changes at a planetary level—the element of water began to be employed in the work of the postwar neo-avant-garde, and, increasingly, throughout subsequent experimental movements of the twentieth century.

James Nisbet is Professor in the Department of Art History and PhD Program in Visual Studies at the University of California, Irvine. He has published widely on the history and theory of modern and contemporary art, with special interests in ecocritical visual art and the history of photography. Nisbet’s research has been supported by institutions including Cornell University’s Society for the Humanities, Georgia O'Keeffe Research Center, Dumbarton Oaks, and Getty Research Institute. His book projects include Ecologies, Environments, and Energy Systems in Art of the 1960s and 1970s (MIT Press, 2014), Second Site (Princeton University Press, 2021), and as editor with Lyle Massey, The Invention of the American Desert: Art, Land, and the Politics of Environment (University of California Press, 2021).

Artnauts: Three Decades of Art, Dialogue and Global Connection

A 30-Year Story That Began at CU �鶹ӰԺ The Arnauts was founded in 1996 at CU �鶹ӰԺ by Dr. George Rivera, Garrison Roots, Dr. Beth Krensky, Dennis Dalton, and Luis Valdovino. More than 220 artists have participated over 30 years creating 256+ exhibitions, in 27 countries and 5 continents. The collective has worked across art, activism, social practice, peace building and global issues. The 2026 exhibition brings together 22 artists with CU �鶹ӰԺ aliations. Many of those artists earned their MFAs or PhDs at CU �鶹ӰԺ. Thirty years after its founding at CU �鶹ӰԺ, the Artnauts return to the University as an established international collective, bringing the story of three decades of collaborative artistic practice back to its place of origin.

Marina Kassianidou, Associate Professor, Art Practices

Marina Kassianidou participated in the group exhibition Nature Unbound, Between Remedy and Poison, at the Armenian Center for Contemporary Experimental Art (NPAK), Yerevan, Armenia, between June 12 and July 3, 2026. The exhibition, curated by Artemis Eleftheriadou, explored nature as a political, cultural, and symbolic field shaped by history, power, and collective memory.

Marina has a solo exhibition, Aggregate, at Sic. Contemporary Culture, Nicosia, Cyprus. Aggregate takes the form of a site-specific response looking into Sic. Contemporary Culture’s space as an architectural and social object, activating a sense of place and possibility through the acts of looking, marking, shifting, drawing, dust gathering, and printmaking. Kassianidou practices a sustained and sustainable mediation that collapses the poles of being-in-relation-to and being-in-resistance-to, turning them into visible, painstakingly crafted demarcations in which the infinitesimal becomes a matter of positioning: of where and how one stands. The exhibition is part of the program world-un-making curated by Evagoras Vanezis.

Stephanie Su, Associate Professor, Art History

Professor Stephanie Su’s latest article, “White in Onchi Kōshirō’s Work in the 1930s: Abstraction, Aspiration, and Contradiction” is now out in the Review of Japanese Culture and Society, vo. 37 (2025). What can a single color reveal about art, identity, and empire? Prof. Su takes white as her guide through the work of Onchi Kōshirō work, the leader of Creative Print Movement in modern Japan, tracing how his bold experiments with color and printmaking sits intersects with abstraction, design, and materiality. Anna Tsouhlarakis, Associate Professor, Art Practices

Anna Tsouhlarakis was the Yale University School of Arts commencement speaker on May 18. She addressed the graduating MFA students and faculty in a ceremony held at the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, CT. Link to her speech.

This summer Anna Tsouhlarakis was appointed to the Board of Governors of Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She was a participant at Skowhegan in the summer of 2002 and returned as Resident Faculty in the summer of 2025. Skowhegan

Recently, Anna Tsouhlarakis was invited to submit a proposal for the High Line Plinth in New York City. The High Line will pick 2 of the 62 proposals to be created and installed for 18 months in 2029 and 2030.

Linda Nguyen Lopez & Mathew McConnell

Linda Nguyen Lopez is a first-generation American artist of Vietnamese and Mexican descent whose vibrant ceramic sculptures examine the psychological resonance of domestic life. Investigating objecthood, material culture, and animism, Lopez explores how everyday items absorb and project human emotion, rearticulating common household forms into fluid, organic abstractions.

Central to Lopez’s practice is the poetic re-imagining of the mundane. Through textured and glazed ceramic forms, she constructs a visual lexicon where inanimate objects seem to possess distinct personalities and moods. Sponges, lint, and furniture fragments are transformed into soft, slumped silhouettes that blur the line between utility and abstraction, inviting viewers to reconsider their relationship with static objects.

Lopez has exhibited extensively across the U.S. and internationally in Italy, England, and New Zealand. Notable museum venues include the Craft Contemporary Museum, Museum of Arts and Design, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. A 2024 United States Artists Fellow, Lopez serves as Associate Professor of Art at the University of Arkansas and currently lives and works in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Mathew McConnell is an artist, educator, and researcher whose ceramic practice critically investigates artistic influence, historical lineage, and the mechanics of visual perception. Working primarily in ceramics, McConnell explores how form, texture, and cultural memory are transmitted through replication, systematically destabilizing notions of authorship, originality, and historical record.

McConnell’s conceptual framework begins with the work of other artists, historical artifacts, or iconic design objects. Through a deliberate process of re-creation and formal abstraction, his sculptures interrogate the spaces between copy and invention, examining how objects alter over time when filtered through personal memory. His smooth, carefully articulated clay surfaces and restrained compositions challenge viewers to consider how value and authority are constructed within the visual arts canon.

McConnell earned his MFA from the University of Colorado, �鶹ӰԺ, and his BFA from Valdosta State University. He has presented solo exhibitions at Mindy Solomon Gallery and Greenwich House Pottery, and has participated in over 80 group exhibitions globally. Recipient of an NCECA Emerging Artist Award, he has completed residencies at the Archie Bray Foundation and Anderson Ranch. McConnell serves as Associate Professor and Area Head of Ceramics at the University of Arkansas.

Hanna Rose Shell, Professor, Art Practices

Hanna Rose Shell was a curator and guest presenter as part of the monthlong New York city-wide celebration of Ken and Flo Jacobs in April 2026.

Shell’s daylong two part program, LIVING ARCHIVE mined the depths of historic actuality in film and home movies to reveal perceptual histories of surveillance, displacement, family, and communication across three works1 New York Ghetto Fish Market 1903 (2006), Urban Peasants (1975), and Jerry Takes a Back Seat, Then Passes Out of the Picture (1987). At UnionDocs, in collaboration with Andrew Lampert. She’s grateful to Aza Jacobs as well as Jamie Wager at CU’s Rare and Distinctive Collections.

Stephanie Su, Assistant Professor, History of Asian Art

Prof. Stephanie Su has been appointed as a Florence Tan Moeson Fellow at the Library of Congress, Washington D.C. During her fellowship, she will pursue her research project, The Lure of Buddhist Aesthetics: Creative Print Movement and Transcultural Discourse in Modern Japan, 1920s-1940s, which examines the intertwined relationships among religion, modernism, and politics in interwar Japan.

Barbara Madsen: Visiting Artist Lecture Series

Barbara Madsen is an artist and Professor at Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. Madsen’s practice is at the intersection of sculpture, prints, painting, ready-mades, and photography. Her vast collections of industrial matter -- spark plugs, machine parts, welding masks, light switches, rubber, plastic, prosthetics, artificial eyes, toys and much more – serve as the stimulus for the work. Her work is riddled with skeptical questions about society, civilization and collapse. Who is the Guardian and who is the Barbarian? Who enters the gate and who’s banned? She aims to lift the lid off canonical hierarchical art forms and queer space. Her work is an ever-evolving quest that picks out and unravels a new thread about greed and power to see how far she can push farcical realities from the primitive to the futuristic. Her explosive use of color is in the service of creating awkward, ridiculously sublime sculptures-works and installations that seem to infect, corrupt, and devour the universe. Yet, seeks joy and sustenance to find balance in an absurd world.

She has had solo exhitions the Blanc Gallery in NYC; Qi Fengge Musuem of Print History, Shenzen, China; MGalleries, NJ; New York Public Library, NYC; Scuola de Grafica, Venice, Italy; Sykes Gallery, PA; Lowry Lab Theater, MN; Palacky University, Czech Republic; Graphics Collective Gallery, Belgrade, Serbia; Recitation Gallery, DE; Pratt Studios Gallery, Brooklyn; Benedicta Art Center, MN; Sommers Gallery, MN; Minneapolis College of Art and Design, MN; and Tyler School of Art, PA, among others. Madsen has been included over 100 group exhibitions.

Brianne Cohen, Associate Professor, Art History

Brianne Cohen's book Don't Look Away: Art, Nonviolence, and Preventive Publics in Contemporary Europe (Duke University, 2023) was a finalist for the Laura Shannon Prize in Contemporary European Studies through the Nanovic Institute for European Studies at the University of Notre Dame. The description from their website states: "One of the preeminent prizes in European studies, and carrying an award of $10,000, the Laura Shannon Prize is awarded annually to the author of the best book in European studies that transcends a focus on any one country, state, or people to stimulate new ways of thinking about contemporary Europe as a whole," and "the Laura Shannon Prize is recognized internationally as one of the leading book prizes in the field of European studies."

William Cobbing: Roser Visiting Artist Lecture

This artist talk is presented in association with Yes &… at the �鶹ӰԺ Museum of Contemporary Art, on view through May 3, 2026. The exhibition was curated by CU �鶹ӰԺ alumni Tobias Fike and Donald Fodness.

�鶹ӰԺ the Exhibition: Rooted in improvisational theater, “Yes, And” is a phrase that embodies an ethos of acceptance and addition. The concept resonates with many contemporary visual artists who emphasize intuition, improvisation, and process. Drawing on this approach, Yes &... brings together an eclectic mix of styles and aesthetics from 18 artists united by their human-centered focus and perspective.

�鶹ӰԺ William Cobbing: Starting from a sculptural sensibility, Cobbing’s art practice encompasses a diverse range of media, including video and installation. Performative encounters are devised with material, such as clay, in which the protagonists are engaged in a repetitive and absurd cycle of manipulating formless surfaces. The works allude to concepts of entropy, underlining the extent to which earthly material is irreversibly dispersed, giving rise to a definitive blurring of the boundaries between the body and landscape, whilst putting the possibility of conclusion on hold. William Cobbing studied sculpture at Central St Martins, De Ateliers, an artists’ institute in Amsterdam and a PhD by Practice at Middlesex University.

Jordan Craig Talk: Swoon Artist-in-Resident

Join us for a special talk with Jordan Ann Craig as she shares insights from her residency at Swoon Art House in �鶹ӰԺ.

Craig will speak about her experience during the residency, her creative process, and her journey as a Native artist. Don’t miss this inspiring conversation celebrating art, identity, and community.

Jordan Ann Craig is a Northern Cheyenne artist living and working in Pojoaque Valley, New Mexico. She grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, and received her B.A. from Dartmouth College. In 2017, Jordan was awarded the H. Allen Brooks Traveling Fellowship as well as the Eric and Barbara Dobkin Fellowship at the School for Advanced Research SAR). In 2019, Jordan was awarded artist residencies at the Institute for American Indian Arts (IAIA) and the Roswell Artist-in-Residence (RAiR) Program. Her work is shown nationally and internationally. Jordan is currently the Native Artist in Residency at Swoon Art House in �鶹ӰԺ, CO.

ConnectArte: Music, Identity & Creative Process

In this ConnectArte workshop, curators Kristina Stamatis and Andrea Garcia Vasquez share how youth incorporated music into their creative and curatorial processes for Nuestras Historias. Music played a key role in activating the exhibition’s themes of identity, justice, tradition and play. The evening will include live musicians performing in the gallery space, creating an immersive experience that highlights sound as a powerful storytelling and design element.

Art Buffs Collective Summer 2026 internship stipend

The Division of Arts and Humanities and the Art Buffs Collective (ABC) offer this $5,000 stipend to undergraduate students in good academic standing who have a major in the College of Arts and Sciences and those currently in the Program in Exploratory Studies.

The stipend is offered to support students in their creative efforts during their summer internship, regardless of major, field or discipline. We aim to support them in demonstrating to campus and beyond how �鶹ӰԺ students know and create their “ABCs."

We'll also support the path to finding a summer internship if a student hasn't secured one yet, and they'll still receive the $5,000 stipend when they do.

What: Art Buffs Collective Summer 2026 internship stipend

When: The application deadline is April 5.
