(Photo: Ethan Carr)</p> </span> </div></div><p><strong>From soldier to scientist</strong></p><p>鈥淚t鈥檚 been a long, kind of windy road to get to where I鈥檓 at today,鈥 Carr says.</p><p>That road, it turns out, began at West Point.</p><p>Carr didn鈥檛 originally set out to become a climate researcher when he enrolled at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. But a mandatory earth-science course nicknamed 鈥淒IRT鈥 sparked an interest he didn鈥檛 know he had.</p><p>鈥淭hat was kind of the first time I realized that you can make a career out of studying and being in really cool environments while you do it,鈥 he says.</p><p>After graduating in 2020 and serving as an infantry officer, Carr鈥檚 career was redirected by an injury, forcing him to reassess his path forward. Business school wasn鈥檛 appealing, but geography still was.</p><p>鈥淚 took a couple of pre-MBA courses and couldn鈥檛 have been more bored in those,鈥 he recalls. 鈥淪o I said, 鈥業 have this geography degree, I might as well try to make a career out of it.鈥欌</p><p>That decision led him to CU 麻豆影院, one of the country鈥檚 top hubs for cryosphere research. He moved to the area before even getting into grad school, taking a chance on himself that would soon pay dividends.</p><p>First came a master鈥檚 degree. Then he turned his attention to pursuing a PhD in geography with support from the <a href="https://cires.colorado.edu/" rel="nofollow">Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences</a> (CIRES).</p><p><strong>Climate leadership across continents</strong></p><p>Carr was recently named part of the inaugural class of youth champions in the HKH - Arctic Youth Leadership Forum, a yearlong fellowship launched by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in Nepal. The forum brings together 12 young leaders from some of the world鈥檚 most climate-vulnerable regions.</p><p>Carr first saw the application on LinkedIn and was intrigued not just by the opportunity, but by the forum鈥檚 emphasis on public education and policy.</p><p>鈥淥ne thing I鈥檝e realized in my scientific journey so far is you have a lot of scientists who are obviously very intelligent, but not everyone wants to engage in public education, especially on the policy side,鈥 Carr says.</p><p>Coming from a military background, he was already used to thinking geopolitically, so he saw the forum as a way to merge science with diplomacy while making a real impact.</p><p>鈥淲ithin our cohort, we represent nations that are some of the largest emitters, being the U.S., China, and India,鈥 Carr explains. 鈥淏ut we also have representatives from some of the countries that are experiencing the effects of climate change firsthand.鈥</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-large"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><p>&nbsp;</p> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2026-02/Ethan%20Carr%20West%20Point.JPG?itok=zcj1tN9l" width="1500" height="1875" alt="Ethan Carr in West Point cadet uniform"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text"><span>While studying at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Ethan Carr took a mandatory earth-science course nicknamed 鈥淒IRT鈥 that sparked an interest he didn鈥檛 know he had. (Photo: Ethan Carr)</span></p> </span> </div></div><p>In the Arctic, Carr points to the rapid melting of the Greenland ice sheet, a reality threatening both biodiversity in the region and Indigenous fishing economies. Meanwhile, countries like Pakistan, Nepal, and India, home to thousands of Himalayan glaciers, are confronting retreating ice sheets that underpin their water security.</p><p>鈥淲e see a lot of similarities in how things are changing, but this collaboration shows the kind of differences in who鈥檚 being affected and the populations being affected more so,鈥 he says.</p><p><strong>Data meet lived experience</strong></p><p>As part of his doctoral work, Carr studies glacial lake outburst floods in Greenland鈥攅vents in which meltwater lakes suddenly burst through glaciers, often with destructive force. He relies on satellite data to track water levels, but he鈥檚 also learned to listen to what local people are witnessing on the ground.</p><p>鈥淟ocal fishermen have been noticing trends where, after these drainage events, they see an increase in primary productivity in local fjords. That has a significant impact on fishing for the year,鈥 he says.</p><p>鈥淭hat鈥檚 not something I would have expected as a scientist just looking at satellite imagery.鈥</p><p>This experience is one among many that has shaped Carr鈥檚 belief in combining scientific knowledge and the lived experiences of those native to the regions being studied. It also helped reinforce his understanding of the importance of bringing more voices to the table.</p><p>鈥淥ur generation and the generation after us are going to be the ones that are inheriting the climate mess we鈥檝e been given by former generations, so those voices need to be heard,鈥 he says.</p><p>Speaking of his fellow members on the leadership forum, Carr adds, 鈥淭hese are people that are passionate and empowered youth that have good ideas.鈥</p><p><strong>A global generation</strong></p><p>Carr sees connection as a unique advantage in his generation鈥檚 ability to catalyze change in the climate arena.</p><p>鈥淲e鈥檙e the most globalized generation there has ever been. My parents couldn鈥檛 pick up the phone and directly communicate with someone living in Bangladesh or Bhutan. But we can do that and form genuine working relationships with somebody 12 hours across the globe and work on projects that connect our regions,鈥 he says.</p><p>He says the ability to collaborate across borders and cultures is a crucial advantage in the fight against climate change.</p><p>But so is perspective.</p><p>In his conversations with peers in South Asia, Carr has come to appreciate just how immediate the crisis is elsewhere and why people closer to home might not be able to recognize the urgency.</p><p>鈥淚n the U.S., I think sometimes we can be kind of separate from understanding what鈥檚 really happening in the world. (Photo: Ethan Carr)</span></p> </span> </div></div><p>鈥淭hese are real impacts happening on that side of the world that we can be pretty ignorant to in the U.S., and it鈥檚 something I鈥檝e become way more aware about after talking with folks from over there. They have a lot more urgency in their fight for climate solutions because they can鈥檛 afford to wait as long as other parts of the world can,鈥 he adds.</p><p><strong>A message for future climate leaders</strong></p><p>When asked what he would say to those who feel overwhelmed by the negativity surrounding climate change, Carr doesn鈥檛 hesitate. He knows the scale of the crisis can feel suffocating, but he鈥檚 also quick to challenge the idea that only scientists belong in the fight.</p><p>鈥淣ot everybody needs to be a scientist or a strict climate activist to have an impact. Really, all you need is to have a voice and a passion for it,鈥 he says.</p><p>Carr believes that the most effective climate solutions will come not just from labs or policy think tanks, but from every corner of society. In fact, he sees this diversity of thought as essential.</p><p>鈥淲e need climate-minded people in all professions, from business to economics, engineering, and especially journalism. The more we talk about it, the more awareness we can bring to the issue,鈥 he says.</p><p>He also sees a need to reframe how climate change is discussed.</p><p>鈥淭he same rhetoric that鈥檚 been used the last few decades of, 鈥楾his is bad because our planet is warming up, and we aren鈥檛 going to be able to live,鈥 hasn鈥檛 delivered. Changing how we discuss it to focus on what climate change will do in certain regions and how it will affect local people and economies, I think, is a better way to look at it,鈥 Carr says.</p><p>More than anything, Carr encourages young people to speak up and get involved鈥攅ven if they don鈥檛 have a degree or defined role yet.</p><p>鈥淭he world needs the youth to step up in these spaces. Don鈥檛 wait to be asked. Make a space for yourself and move into it. In this current moment when crises intersect鈥攁s economic inequality widens, housing and healthcare insecurity grows and geopolitical uncertainties strengthen鈥攎any of us experience a quieter crisis of moral fatigue. The scale of what is wrong can numb our attention.</span></p><p><span lang="EN-IN">One of the many reasons King鈥檚 legacy matters is because it refuses cynicism. Fifty-eight years after his death, we are faced with the same question as he: How do we turn 鈥渢his fatigue of despair into buoyancy of hope,鈥 to use the preacher鈥檚 own phrase? In his speeches, he always articulated a common humanity: "We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny." This network of mutuality made him see social divisions as unnatural and morally indefensible.</span></p><p><span lang="EN-IN">As a young man, his train journey from Atlanta to Connecticut allowed him to witness how Black people sat separate from whites up to the Mason-Dixon line. But north of it, that barrier disappeared, revealing the arbitrariness of racial divisions and setting him on a lifelong path toward reconciliation. If, as W.E.B. Du Bois famously observed, the problem of the century was the problem of the color line, King's response was to wage a struggle against this separation through nonviolence.</span></p><p><span lang="EN-IN">In doing so, King was informed by an amalgam of influences, from Gandhi鈥檚 philosophy and practice of nonviolence to Walter Rauschenbusch鈥檚 social gospel. King wrestled with each philosophical idea and method as he exercised his own conscience. Added to this was his experience in organizing鈥攆rom Montgomery鈥檚 bus boycott to the Poor People鈥檚 Campaign in Chicago, each, in its way, shaping and expanding King鈥檚 conception of humanity. The result was a moral geography without borders鈥攐ne that may offer a way out of fatigue.</span></p><p><span lang="EN-IN"><strong>King鈥檚 life and practice</strong></span></p><p><span lang="EN-IN">Throughout his life, King presented groups with moral demands attuned to their social position. From African Americans, he demanded nonviolent discipline in protest, a rigorous collective practice capable of transforming suffering into political force. From northern white liberals, he asked for more than verbal agreement with racial equality. As he put it, 鈥淚t is one thing to agree with the goal of integration legally; it is another to commit oneself positively and actively to the ideal of integration.鈥 From Southern white moderates, he demanded courage to overcome fear, to break with social consensus and to persuade others.</span></p><p><span lang="EN-IN">I read this strategy, unique to King, as a widening of moral responsibility. To separate morality from social life was, in his view, to empty it of force.</span></p><p><span lang="EN-IN">Similarly, individual ethical commitments that remained confined to belief, civility or legal agreement were insufficient because they left unjust structures intact. Instead of placing morality above or apart from social relations, King embedded it within them.</span></p><p><span lang="EN-IN">The result was a slow and gradual forging of solidarities, which transcended religious and class divisions. The Montgomery bus boycott, for instance, brought together Baptists, Methodists, Lutherans, Presbyterians and Episcopalians. Though some clergy at times resisted King鈥檚 call to address social realities鈥攊nstead suggesting that such matters be left to courts鈥擪ing reminded them that&nbsp;鈥淸a]ny religion that professes to be concerned about the souls of men and is not concerned about the slums that damn them, the economic conditions that strangle them and the social conditions that cripple them is a spiritually moribund religion awaiting burial.鈥&nbsp;In doing so, King redefined the church鈥檚 role as a moral actor accountable to the material conditions of people鈥檚 lives.</span></p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-xlarge"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><p>&nbsp;</p> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2026-01/MLK%20India%20stamp.jpg?itok=Nrklo0gq" width="1500" height="1121" alt="Martin Luther King stamp from India"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text"><span lang="EN-IN">During his 1959 visit to India, Martin Luther King Jr. was introduced at a public gathering as a fellow 鈥渦ntouchable." (Photo: Wikimedia Commons)</span></p> </span> </div></div><p><span lang="EN-IN">His moral appeal transcended class divisions as physicians, teachers and lawyers stood alongside domestic workers and laborers in marches, united by King's vision of common life. Thus, social uplift became a shared undertaking in which no group stood outside responsibility. By grounding ethics in social struggle, King laid the foundation for a politics aimed at social reform.</span></p><p><span lang="EN-IN"><strong>鈥業 am an untouchable鈥</strong></span></p><p><span lang="EN-IN">Social reform, in any credible sense, must begin from the lived realities of those most affected by injustice and confront the structures that sustain inequality. Not only did King鈥檚 philosophy align with Gandhi鈥檚 non-violence, it was also informed by a deep encounter with caste as a form of structural oppression.</span></p><p><span lang="EN-IN">During his 1959 visit to India, King was introduced at a public gathering as a fellow 鈥渦ntouchable,鈥 a term then used to describe Dalits, those placed at the bottom of caste hierarchy and historically subjected to extreme social exclusion. Initially taken aback by the comparison, King reflected on its meaning: 鈥淵es,鈥 he said, 鈥淚 am an untouchable, and every Negro in the United States of America is an untouchable.鈥 He recognized the shared condition of social degradation produced by social systems. Such systems were deemed moral evils that demanded organized dismantling. Speaking of race and caste, he continued, 鈥淲e have a moral mandate to get rid of this evil system.鈥</span></p><p><span lang="EN-IN">In this respect, King鈥檚 project of racial integration and equality resonates intimately with that of&nbsp;Dr.&nbsp;B.R. Ambedkar, the early-20th-century Dalit intellectual and political leader and principal architect of modern India鈥檚 constitution. Born into an 鈥渦ntouchable鈥 caste, Ambedkar argued that political freedom without social reform was hollow and that democracy in independent India could not survive unless caste was dismantled at its roots.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span lang="EN-IN">While King is most often read alongside&nbsp;Gandhi, more enduring intellectual and strategic affinities lie with Ambedkar.&nbsp; Both leaders share historic trajectories, where King, the son of a Black preacher, rose to become a national leader of the U.S. Civil Rights movement; and Ambedkar, born into a Dalit family, became India鈥檚 foremost leader of the oppressed castes.&nbsp; These parallel lives help us see how both thinkers understood social oppression as systemic and placed social reform at the center of a nation鈥檚 political life. Recent calls for ethical renewal often focus on individual responsibility while leaving social relations largely unexamined. Consider Dutch author Rutger Bregman's 2025 book </span><em><span lang="EN-IN">Moral Ambition</span></em><span lang="EN-IN">, which asks people to dedicate their time to improving the world鈥攜et his framework reveals assumptions that, while indicative of our times, need to be reviewed.</span></p><p><span lang="EN-IN">Bregman argues that scientists, doctors, entrepreneurs, engineers and lawyers must become "morally ambitious" and that this is the pathway to solving the world鈥檚 most pressing issues. But his framework dismisses ordinary people, describing them as "herd animals" who "do what we're taught to do, accept what we're handed, believe what we're told is true."</span></p><p><span lang="EN-IN">Where King recognized the masses as capable of spiritual awakening, Bergman鈥檚 articulation of morality strips them of agency, seeing ordinary people as passive followers "sticking to the script that goes with our kind of life."</span></p><p><span lang="EN-IN">In thinking about this notion of moral ambition, it is important to remember that modern life still divides labor between activities that are or may seem as menial and routine and those that are seen as creative and ideal. A major portion of working people, especially caste minorities in the Global South and racial minorities in the United States, fall into the former category. To label such populations as "herds" or suggest they lack moral ambition refuses genuine engagement with the actual forces that shape people's lives, forces deeply felt and understood by both Ambedkar and King.</span></p><p><span lang="EN-IN">A portion of King鈥檚 enduring appeal lies in this recognition. Ordinary people face real economic and social constraints that shape their choices. These may include the struggle to make rent, raise children, navigate discrimination and survive without reliable state support.&nbsp;King was intimately aware of how working people and the poor possess moral agency even when systems limit their options, and he campaigned to make people see this for themselves. This recognition is the beginning of self-respect.</span></p><p><span lang="EN-IN">In his sermons and speeches, he spoke to the part of our being which is a gift, our ability to live dignified lives despite and against inequalities and oppressive structures. Through King鈥檚 words, people could see the constraints but also the real meaning of their lives, encouraging them to organize and to act. From Washington to Mumbai, from university halls to churches, this was the transformation that the preacher from Atlanta sought.</span></p><p><span lang="EN-IN">This is King's enduring gift, a moral framework that refuses to separate the personal from the social, that sees ordinary people as agents and that understands justice as something we create together rather than await from authorities or technocratic experts. Below, the landscape doesn鈥檛 look like the same one she once hiked and skied. That鈥檚 exactly why she鈥檚 flying.</p><p>For Writer (<a href="/coloradan/class-notes/katie-writer" rel="nofollow">Geog鈥91</a>), flying offers a unique vantage point from which to witness the planet changing in real time.</p><p>鈥淐limate change is something I saw coming all the way back in my CU days studying geography, and I knew it would be a big part of my life鈥檚 calling. I have a sense of duty as a photojournalist pilot and an advocate for the environment. (Photo: Katie Writer)</span></p> </span> </div></div><p>From documenting glacier retreat to photographing generations of <a href="https://www.alaskasprucebeetle.org/outbreak-status/" rel="nofollow">spruce trees withered by beetle kill</a>, she鈥檚 built a career at the intersection of science, storytelling and adventure.</p><p><strong>Skiing onto the page</strong></p><p>Writer鈥檚 journey to the cockpit wasn鈥檛 traditional. At CU 麻豆影院, she majored in geography and raced on the ski team, balancing course loads with weekend races. After graduating, she worked as an interpreter for the United States Olympic Committee at the 1992 Winter Olympics in France, and that lit a fire in her for world-class racing.</p><p>鈥淚 quickly moved up the ranks and placed 17th at the U.S. National Championships in 1994,鈥 Writer recalls.</p><p>But when an injury derailed her career, she pivoted her skiing passion from racing to the page, becoming an aptly named writer of outdoor adventure articles for the likes of <em>Couloir</em>&nbsp;and <em>Powder</em> magazines. One story led her to Denali National Park.</p><p>鈥淥n that trip, I was inspired to become a pilot,鈥 she says. 鈥淚鈥檇 also been on another ski trip where a Cessna 185 flew us into the wilderness in a ski plane, and it made me realize that these little planes give you some great access to the wilderness.鈥</p><p>After earning her pilot鈥檚 license with support from aviation scholarships, Writer settled in Alaska, where she has since filled her appetite for adventure and storytelling through the lens of her camera. She didn't give up competitive skiing entirely, though, and races in three <span>World Extreme Skiing competitions in Alaska</span></p><p>鈥淥thers were noticing my photography and really appreciating the bird鈥檚 eye view I was getting as an aerial photographer/pilot. It helped me realize that capturing these images was something I was really passionate about,鈥 she says.</p><p><strong>Seeing the story from above</strong></p><p>When Writer takes her camera into the sky, the viewpoint of <a href="https://www.katiewritergallery.com/aerialphotographyAlaskaart" data-entity-type="external" rel="nofollow">Alaska鈥檚 stunning landscapes</a> brings awe, but also a sense of urgency. From her Super Cub, she observes patterns of change. Hillsides of dying spruce. Once thriving glaciers shrinking every year. Riverbanks collapsing after torrential storms. She has returned often to the same places, documenting changes that most people never get to see.</p><p>鈥淭here鈥檚 no doubt when you live in Alaska, you see the effects of the <a href="https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2020/october/pilot/witness-to-change" data-entity-type="external" rel="nofollow">beetle kill</a>. I realized this was an excellent way to present climate change with the visuals from an aerial perspective,鈥 Writer says.</p><p>Warmer winters have allowed spruce beetles to survive year-round, leaving entire forests stained with rust-colored decay. (Photos: Katie Writer)</p> </span> <p>鈥淲e spent a lot of time going back to the toe of the Ruth glacier, photographing the specific area year after year and seeing how dramatically the receding lines were, as well as observing the collapsing walls,鈥 she adds.</p><p>She also tracks what happens downstream. After record rainfall from an atmospheric river in August 2025, she flew over the swollen Talkeetna River and saw entire stretches of bank washed away.</p><p>鈥淭hese weather events with high levels of moisture, in my opinion, are another visual acceleration of erosion.鈥</p><p>These scenes are part of a photographic timeline Writer has spent years assembling. With each flight, she adds a new layer to the growing visual archive that captures the rapid reshaping of Alaska鈥檚 wilderness. For those of us on the ground, it鈥檚 a rare glimpse at what our world looks like from above.</p><p><strong>Exploring a new medium</strong></p><p>In time, the stories Writer wanted to tell outgrew both print and pictures. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she launched the All Cooped Up Alaska Podcast, a show born from isolation and the desire to connect. (Photo: Katie Writer)&nbsp;</span></p> </span> </div></div><p>鈥淭he benefit of producing your own podcast is that you get to be as creative as you want and can tell the stories you want to tell,鈥 she says. 鈥淎 lot of the stories I used to create for our local radio station would be edited down to three and a half minutes for airtime. I was always a little bit frustrated by that.鈥</p><p>Now, Writer brings on regular guests, including prominent Alaskan climatologists Rick Thoman and Brian Brettschneider, to discuss everything from wildfire smoke to Arctic feedback loops. She also covers major events like the Arctic Encounter Symposium in Anchorage.</p><p>鈥淎rctic Encounter is attended by world leaders from all around Arctic countries, including Indigenous leaders, policymakers, scientists, villagers and Arctic dwellers,鈥 she says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a very inspiring event with fascinating panels of people talking about the problems they鈥檙e having and solutions they envision.鈥</p><p><span>Writer has also added a sightseeing&nbsp;business&nbsp;to Visionary Adventures, taking people out on Super Cub Airplane Rides so they can experience the beauty themselves. And these days, her children are her most frequent fliers: "We鈥攎y son, Jasper, and daughter, Wren鈥攈ave also enjoyed soaring above the wilds looking for wild game and fishing spots."&nbsp;</span></p><p><strong>CU at altitude</strong></p><p>Looking back, Writer credits her time at CU 麻豆影院 with helping to shape her worldview.</p><p>鈥淥ne of the primary things that made a major influence on choosing geography as a major was an upper-division course that was in the Arctic Circle, learning field research techniques,鈥 she says.</p><p>She also recalls the atmosphere of both 麻豆影院鈥檚 scientific community and cultural diversity.</p><p>鈥淎s a sophomore, our house was across the street from the Hari Krishnas, where we ate a meal a week and enjoyed philosophizing on life and world religions. It was just a really neat place to be,鈥 Writer says. 鈥淎ll of the beautiful architecture and even the Guggenheim building for Geography really held a special place in my heart for a place of learning.鈥</p><p>Her advice for today鈥檚 students? Write often.</p><p>鈥淲riting is a really important skill that I鈥檓 noticing more and more being lost with the use of AI. Getting the pen flowing onto a piece of paper lets you tap into a whole different type of creativity,鈥 she says.</p><p>鈥淩ealize that you may not know what your whole career is going to be, but don鈥檛 be afraid to explore and take a risk in opportunities you might get. Colorado is one of the original seven states in the Geography Alliance Network.</p><p>The <a href="https://coga1.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapSeries/index.html?appid=593ea2b5707a4a78bd709489138f0437" rel="nofollow">alliance was founded</a>, in part, to provide resources and professional development for elementary and secondary school teachers, address policies related to geography education at the state and local levels and expose the public to activities related to geographic knowledge.</p><p>In relaunching COGA, leaders in the Department of Geography note, 鈥淲e believe the inherent interdisciplinarity of geography provides an essential foundation for tackling the opportunities and challenges facing Colorado by providing students with an integrated set of skills to meet an ever-changing job market.</p><p>鈥淭his initiative will center Indigenous knowledge, focus on under-resourced schools and communities and highlight the value and experiences of Colorado鈥檚 diverse communities. Additionally, Flint says being raised in the busy ferry port of Dover made a powerful impression on him by highlighting the country鈥檚 long history as a maritime nation.</span></p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-medium"><div class="ucb-callout-content"> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2025-09/Colin%20Flint.png?itok=Ps8Lc3Su" width="1500" height="1500" alt="portrait of Colin Flint"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text">Colin Flint, a CU 麻豆影院 PhD geography graduate, researches <span>the rise and fall of great world powers.</span></p> </span> </div></div><p><span>鈥淒over definitely has influenced me, being so close to the water,鈥 he says. 鈥淢y high school was on a hill overlooking the harbor, which at the time was the busiest ferry port in the world, with ships going back and forth to France and Belgium. So, the notion was very much rooted in me that Britain drew its power, historically, from the sea.鈥</span></p><p><span>At one point, Flint entertained the idea of joining the Royal Navy before setting his career sights on academia. He obtained his bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 degrees in Britain, then pursued his PhD in geography at the 麻豆影院 thanks to fortuitous connections between his undergrad mentor and CU 麻豆影院&nbsp;</span><a href="/geography/" rel="nofollow"><span>Department of Geography</span></a><span> Professor </span><a href="/geography/john-oloughlin" rel="nofollow"><span>John O鈥橪oughlin.</span></a></p><p><span>鈥淚 moved to United States of America in 1990 to attend university, and the literature at the time and discussions were all very declinist. It was very much, 鈥楢merica has gone down the tubes,鈥欌 he says. 鈥淏roadly speaking, I moved from a declined power into a declining power, or so I thought at the time.鈥</span></p><p><span>After the fall of the Soviet Union, Flint says the idea of America as a declining power was largely replaced with a triumphalist narrative that saw the U.S. as the world鈥檚 only remaining superpower.</span></p><p><span>Ideas about what makes a country an economic and political superpower鈥攁nd how a country can lose its status as a&nbsp;</span><a href="https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/hegemonic" rel="nofollow"><span>hegemonic power</span></a><span>鈥攈ad been percolating in Flint鈥檚 brain for years when he recently published his book&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Near-Far-Waters-Geopolitics-Seapower-ebook/dp/B0D5RCZFQM" rel="nofollow"><em><span>Near and Far Waters: The Geopolitics of Seapower</span></em></a><span>. The book specifically looks at the Netherlands, Great Britain and the United States for context on how the countries used sea power to project their economic and political influence across the globe.</span></p><p><span>Flint spoke with </span><em><span>Colorado Arts and Sciences Magazine</span></em><span> about his book, while also offering insights on how current events are shaping the outlook for the United States and the world. His answers have been edited for clarity and condensed.</span></p><p><em><span><strong>Question: What is the context for your book鈥檚 title:&nbsp;</strong></span></em><span><strong>Near and Far Waters</strong></span><em><span><strong>?</strong></span></em></p><p><span><strong>Flint:</strong> There are legal terms about coasts and the exclusive economic zone around the country鈥檚 coastlines, but I鈥檓 not using it in that way. If a country wants to protect itself from potential invasion, it needs to control those waters off its coastline鈥攊t鈥檚 </span><em><span>near waters.</span></em></p><p><span>Some countries, once they鈥檝e established control of their near waters, have the ability and desire to project beyond that, across the oceans into what would then become its </span><em><span>far waters.</span></em><span> If you think about Great Britain in the context of the British Empire, once it fought off European threats to its coastline鈥攊ts near waters鈥攊t was then able to develop the sea power to establish its empire. It was in African far waters, it was in Indian far waters, in Middle East far waters and so on.</span></p><p><span>Another good example of this would be how the United States of America, over the course of history, pushed other countries out of its near waters. The Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico are good examples, where Spanish and British influence were ended over the 1800s and 1900s. And then by establishing control through annexation of Hawaii and the purchase of Alaska, America developed its Pacific near waters, too, which it expanded upon through the course of World War II, pushing the Japanese back and establishing bases in Okinawa, Japan; the Philippines; and Guam, etc.</span></p><p><em><span><strong>Question: One of your chapters is titled 鈥楴o Island is an Island.鈥 What do you mean by that?</strong></span></em></p><p><span><strong>Flint:&nbsp;</strong>I was talking about how the projection of sea power requires the control of islands. Often, the geopolitical goal and benefit of controlling an island is not the island itself鈥攊t鈥檚 how it enables projection of power further, or how it hinders other countries鈥 projection of power by being near sea lines of communication that you can have a base to try and disrupt. For example, when Hawaii became part of the United States, it allowed the U.S. to project power across the Pacific. Again, it鈥檚 not the island itself鈥攊t鈥檚 the projection of power across an ocean.</span></p><p><span>Projecting sea power is about more than just having a strong navy.</span></p><p><em><span><strong>Question: If one country鈥檚 far waters extend into the near waters of another country, that would seem to be a recipe for conflict, would it not?</strong></span></em></p><p><span><strong>Flint:</strong> That is the kicker, of course, that a sea power鈥檚 far waters are another country鈥檚 near waters. And it has historically led to conflicts and even wars. It鈥檚 always involved violence鈥攁nd not just between great powers and lesser powers, but also violence against the people living on islands or in coastal lands where sea powers are looking to establish dominance and exploit resources.</span></p><p><em><span><strong>Question: China has been rapidly expanding its navy in recent years. Is it simply beefing up its sea forces to protect its near waters, or is it looking to supplant the U.S. as the dominant sea power? Or are there other motives at play?</strong></span></em></p><p><span><strong>Flint:&nbsp;</strong>You often see in newspaper articles written in the United States and maybe other Western countries that China has the biggest navy in the world. This always makes me laugh because, yes, it鈥檚 got hundreds and hundreds of tiny little coastal defense vessels, but even now that it has two aircraft carriers, it does not have the ability to project power like the United States of America, which has 11 carrier groups. So, I think that should always be recognized.</span></p><p><span>The other sort of trope that鈥檚 often wielded out there, which I think we need to question, is: The West is worried about China developing a navy, because it will allow China to disrupt trade networks. Well, wait a minute. China is very dependent on imports, especially of fuel or energy. Additionally, it is the world鈥檚 largest trading economy, and it鈥檚 worried about the robustness of its domestic economy. They cannot maintain their economic growth based purely on their domestic market, so they need to have a global economic presence for markets and for securing inputs into their economy.</span></p><p><span>Putting those two things together, it makes no sense why China would want to disrupt global trade. In fact, the country鈥檚 reaction to President Trump鈥檚 sanctions tells us that the last thing China wants is global trade disrupted. They鈥檙e very worried about the fragility of their own economy and whether that leads to social unrest, etc. The flip side of that is how the West could really hurt China by blocking those trade routes to prevent energy imports into China and exports.</span></p><p><span>China is definitely trying to grow its navy. I think what makes it so interesting is its simultaneous attempt to have a navy that can defend its near waters while perhaps preventing the operation of the United States in its far waters. And it has historically led to conflicts and even wars," notes scholar Colin Flint.</span> ("Naval Battle of 1812," <span>Painting, Oil on Canvas; By Rodolfo Claudus; 1962/U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command)</span></p> </span> </div></div><p><em><span><strong>Question: From your book, it seems like you have some serious concerns about the potential for a serious conflict arising from disputes over near and far waters?</strong></span></em></p><p><span><strong>Flint:</strong>&nbsp;In fact, I鈥檝e never been so concerned or worried in my career, to be honest with you. When I started teaching my class on political geography many moons ago, let鈥檚 say in the mid-1990s, I used to start off with some structural model of global political change, which essentially says, we have cycles of war and peace, for the want of a better term.</span></p><p><span>And I asked my students to try and get them engaged: 鈥楶icture yourself in 2025. What are you going to be doing?鈥 It was staggering to me how many of them believed that they would be millionaires and already retired (laughs).</span></p><p><span>The point of that was that the model I was using predicted another period of global war, starting in 2025. I don鈥檛 do that exercise anymore, because it isn鈥檛 </span><em><span>funny</span></em><span>; it鈥檚 really quite serious. So yes, the risk of war is high, and I think it could emerge in a number of different places. One focus is on the South China Sea, the near waters of China, as that is clearly a potential flashpoint. Taiwan is the obvious focal point of what that conflict would look like.</span></p><p><span>I also wonder about potential flashpoints of conflict in Chinese far waters鈥攁nd that could include the Arctic and the Northern Atlantic, because another factor that has to be considered is global climate change and the increasing possibility of a trade route through the North Pole, which would cut trade times from China into European markets considerably. Those waters represent U.S. near waters, so 鈥</span></p><p><em><span><strong>Question: Do you envision any sort of viable alternatives to a conflict between world powers over near and far waters, especially in today鈥檚 environment?</strong></span></em></p><p><span><strong>Flint:&nbsp;</strong>My motivation with the book was with an eye to waving some sort of flag about how to think about peace rather than war. Most of our lenses are national lenses. If we keep on this pattern of a national lens, then I see a strong likelihood to repeat these cycles of near and far water sea powers, which have always involved a period of global war.</span></p><p><span>We need to change that lens. We need to have a global view as to why countries are always seeking far waters, entering other people鈥檚 near waters and why that can lead to conflict.</span></p><p><span>Today, we鈥檙e facing a humanity-scale problem, which is global climate change. Is that the thing that will tell us we need to work together, rather than compete? I鈥檓 not saying it is; I鈥檓 saying, if I see a glimmer of optimism to your question, that鈥檚 it.</span></p><p><em><span><strong>Question: Based upon your research, if a country loses its status as a hegemonic power, can it later recover that status? And, in the context of today鈥檚 world, what might things look like if the U.S. lost its hegemonic status?</strong></span></em></p><p><span><strong>Flint:</strong> The short answer is no, based upon past history, a country that loses its hegemonic status has not been able to reclaim it once it鈥檚 gone.</span></p><p><span>But to your second question, it goes back to the question about what China鈥檚 intentions are. In American popular culture, where every sports team has to be No. 1, even if they are eighth in some Mickey Mouse conference, there is this obsession that there has to be a singular winner or champion.</span></p><p><span>What I鈥檓 saying is that we shouldn鈥檛 just assume that if the United States declines there will be another emergent dominant power in the world. Now an assistant professor of geography at the 麻豆影院 with a focus on health, neighborhoods and aging, she鈥檚 still an unlikely candidate to write a book about the body鈥檚 microbiome.</p><p>Yet, alongside her father, <a href="https://biochem.ubc.ca/fac-research/faculty/brett-finlay/" rel="nofollow">Brett Finlay</a>, a professor of biochemistry and microbiology at The University of British Columbia, that鈥檚 exactly what she has become.</p><p>Together, the pair wrote <a href="https://douglas-mcintyre.com/products/9781771624428?srsltid=AfmBOopQ1Ju-4v2DbjY6iC3jiCljwL2I_FIpZKCyger_lso5VBx7MpSw" rel="nofollow"><em>The Microbiome Master Key: Harness Your Microbes to Unlock Whole-Body Health and Lifelong Vitality</em></a>. (Photo: Jessica Finlay)</span></p> </span> </div></div><p>But hiding below the science is a family story that bridges disciplines and perspectives to give readers a better understanding of the hidden ecosystem within everyone.</p><p><strong>From aging in place to microbial studies</strong></p><p>Jessica鈥檚 primary research focuses on how environments affect health, aging and quality of mid- to later-life. She regularly delves into what it means to grow old in different neighborhoods and seeks to understand what people need to stay safe, active and connected.</p><p>鈥淚鈥檓 a health geographer and environmental gerontologist,鈥 she explains. 鈥淚鈥檇 never considered microbes as part of my research, but in conversations with my dad, I realized that they are everywhere and underpin many of the processes I study.鈥</p><p>Her interest in aging began during grad school, when she volunteered at community programs for older adults in north Minneapolis. That experience鈥攁nd the changing urban landscape she witnessed鈥攈elped her to develop a dissertation focused on the lived experience of aging in place.</p><p>One recurring fear she identified while interviewing 125 older adults was the threat of Alzheimer鈥檚 disease and related dementias. Hearing their concerns eventually propelled Jessica to study how neighborhood environments affect dementia risk.</p><p>But it wasn鈥檛 until she started talking more about her work with her father, a long-time microbial science researcher, that she considered an even smaller-scale environmental factor.</p><p>鈥淢icrobes are our invisible neighbors and lifelong partners that fundamentally shape our health and well-being,鈥 Jessica says. 鈥淲hen participants in my study are able to exercise, get outside, and socialize, they are swapping microbes and picking up new ones.鈥</p><p><strong>Eat dirt</strong></p><p>In 2016, Brett published <a href="https://www.google.com/books/edition/Let_Them_Eat_Dirt/qH-LCwAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=0" rel="nofollow"><em>Let Them Eat Dirt: How Microbes Can Make Your Child Healthier</em></a>, a popular science book focused on how early microbial exposure supports childhood development.</p><p>The public response was positive, but readers kept circling back to one question: 鈥淲hat about the rest of us?鈥</p><p>Preparing for a follow-up, Brett knew his daughter would be the perfect collaborator. It also provides a list of prescriptive things you can do based on science to improve your health,鈥 Brett says.</p><p>That holistic approach was important to both him and Jessica. While Brett reviewed thousands of publications across microbiology and immunology, Jessica took the lead in translating technical insights into clear, practical prose. She also infused the book with narrative storytelling, expert interviews and examples from everyday life.</p><p>鈥淲e wanted to distill an overwhelming breadth of information into key evidence and studies so that readers have the facts to make health decisions based on what鈥檚 right for them,鈥 Jessica explains.</p><p>Their core message? Taking care of your microbial health isn鈥檛 inherently complicated, but it often requires us to rethink how we move through the world.</p><p>As Brett puts it, 鈥淟ook after your microbes and they will look after you. Eat healthy, exercise, stress less, sleep well, and have a good community of family and friends. All these factors really impact the microbiome.鈥</p><p><strong>Collaborating for a cause</strong></p><p>Collaborating on a book is never easy. Doing so across disciplines poses its own challenges, and during the years-long process, Jessica and Brett had to overcome many of them. But they both found the experience deeply rewarding.</p><p>Jessica says, 鈥淲e wanted to continue the conversation from my dad鈥檚 first book. I was initially apprehensive to write together, since my depth of knowledge is health geography and environmental gerontology, not microbiology. But it was a true pleasure to collaborate and each [of us brought] distinct skills and knowledge to the book.鈥</p><p>Now, the Finlays hope their book will help people make informed choices about their health, whether it鈥檚 deciding if a probiotic is worth the hype or learning how to create healthier environments at home.</p><p>鈥淭hankfully it鈥檚 relatively simple and hopefully affordable to support your microbes. Eat an array of plant-based foods. In response to the exclusion of student voices, a group of graduate students began work to give students a seat at the table and engage the undergraduate community in CU鈥檚 climate-planning work. First, the group launched a petition calling for student participation in the drafting of the CAP. Then the group helped pass a resolution through student government to grant student seats on the committee implementing the CAP in the future.&nbsp;</p><p>鈥淪tudents have always been key drivers of sustainability and climate action on campuses across the U.S., including at CU 麻豆影院,鈥 the team says. 鈥淎s young people, our futures are jeopardized by the climate crisis, so we have a collective stake in rapidly reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.鈥</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-xlarge"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><p>&nbsp;</p> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2025-05/Sustainability%20class.jpg?itok=Uz8FNx56" width="1500" height="1125" alt="graduate students and faculty who co-create climate action planning course"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text">The graduate students and faculty who <span>co-designed and now teach an undergraduate course on climate-action planning include (left to right) Brigid Mark, Nadav Orian Peer, Jonah Shaw, Sean Benjamin, Mariah Bowman and Sara Fleming.</span></p> </span> </div></div><p>But the group didn鈥檛 stop there. Fueled by a shared passion for climate mitigation and the belief that students should help shape the university鈥檚 future, the group of five graduate students from four different departments spent hundreds of hours co-designing and now teaching an undergraduate course on climate-action planning.</p><p>The course gives undergrads hands-on experience with CU鈥檚 campus emissions data, collaboration opportunities with university stakeholders and a chance to develop sustainability strategies that could be implemented campuswide.</p><p>Their efforts recently earned the group CU 麻豆影院鈥檚 2025 Campus Sustainability Award for Student Leadership. The group also won a $5,000 scholarship from the <a href="https://zontafoothills.org/" rel="nofollow">women-led nonprofit Zonta Foothills Foundation</a>, in recognition for their groundbreaking work in climate education and advocacy. The CU School of Engineering, following advocacy from generous faculty members David Paradis and Carol Cogswell, was also gracious enough to provide funding for their work.</p><p><strong>A more engaging climate classroom</strong></p><p>The group of graduate instructors brings an interdisciplinary approach and myriad perspectives to the classroom.&nbsp;</p><p>The teaching team includes <a href="/law/2024/03/20/mariah-bowman-25-named-2024-2025-colorado-law-wyss-scholar" rel="nofollow">Mariah Bowman</a> (law), <a href="/geography/sara-fleming" rel="nofollow">Sara Fleming</a> (geography), <a href="/ecenter/meet-our-staff/cusg-environmental-board/sean-benjamin" rel="nofollow">Sean Benjamin</a> (mechanical engineering), <a href="/sociology/brigid-mark" rel="nofollow">Brigid Mark</a> (sociology) and <a href="/atoc/jonah-shaw-hehimhis" rel="nofollow">Jonah Shaw</a> (atmospheric and oceanic sciences). Each has worked to tackle climate-related issues through the lens of their expertise, from Indigenous environmental justice to climate-change modeling.</p><p>The team鈥檚 diverse makeup is reflected in the design of their course and has fueled their success. But the road to this point hasn鈥檛 been easy.</p><p>鈥淭his is a labor of love,鈥 the team says. 鈥淲e are doing this because we care. Funding and the time required have been challenges.鈥</p><p>Before the course launched, each graduate instructor spent many unpaid hours creating the syllabus, listing the course and building campus partnerships to access emissions data. During the semester, they spend many hours a week on teaching responsibilities that come in addition to their regular duties.</p><p>Financial support from the School of Engineering and the Zonta Foothills award has helped, but long term, the team hopes to see the course institutionalized and funded.</p><p>The team says, 鈥淚nstitutionalizing the course so that it runs each year<span>&nbsp;</span>and guaranteeing funding for instructors and teaching assistants would ensure the longevity and sustainability of this course. From there, they split into teams to tackle different emissions categories on campus: commuting, waste, business travel and student/parent flights.</p><p>鈥淪tudents work in four teams, each focused on a different category of campus emissions. They鈥檙e developing strategies to reduce emissions for their category, adding depth and student perspective to the high-level strategy suggestions in the CAP,鈥 the instructors say.</p><p>Guest speakers, including administrators and national experts, round out the curriculum. Students have heard from Stanford University鈥檚 sustainability team and CU 麻豆影院 faculty like Professor Karen Bailey (environmental studies) and Professor Nadav Orian Peer (law). They also meet with stakeholders across campus to refine their proposals.</p><p>The team believes this approach is the best way to facilitate opportunities to create actionable, equity-centered climate strategies grounded in real data.</p><p>鈥淚nvolving students in climate initiatives enables them to apply knowledge about climate change to their own institution, experience they will carry to become leaders in climate action in their future workplaces and communities,鈥 says Mark.</p><p>The results are already visible on campus.</p><p>One student team is working with CU鈥檚 transportation specialist to revise the campus commuting survey. Another is working on a survey for better tracking of student and parent air travel. One undergraduate took the initiative to launch a campus club to raise awareness about the CAP. Others hope to join implementation committees or pursue careers in sustainability.</p><p>鈥淭o me, this demonstrates that students are hungry for interdisciplinary courses that enable them to apply their skills and creativity to issues on campus and engage with solutions to the climate crisis,鈥 Fleming says.</p><p>For Bowman, the most rewarding part of the experience is the students themselves. 鈥淭hey are passionate, knowledgeable, interested, hardworking and fun to be around! It has been deeply meaningful to get to train them on something I care so much about, and have them care about it in return,鈥 she says.</p><p>And for Fleming, designing and teaching the course has also given her much. Roughly one in every five adults experienced symptoms of anxiety or depression over the past two weeks, according to a 2022 CDC <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nhsr/nhsr213.pdf" rel="nofollow"><span>report</span></a>. The good news is a better state of mind could be right in your backyard鈥攍iterally.</p><p>Perceived greenspace exposure鈥攚hich represents a person鈥檚 perception of the amount and quality of access to and time spent in nearby greenspace鈥攎ay have a significant positive effect on certain aspects of mental health, according to <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S027249442400241X?via%3Dihub" rel="nofollow"><span>new research</span></a> from an interdisciplinary 麻豆影院 team.</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-large"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><p>&nbsp;</p> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2025-02/Emma%20Rieves%20and%20Colleen%20Reid.jpg?itok=3xkkIJhd" width="1500" height="1046" alt="headshots of Emma Rieves and Colleen Reid"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text">Emma Rieves (left), a PhD candidate in the CU 麻豆影院 Department of Geography, and Colleen Reid, an associate professor of geography, along with their research colleagues, found that perceived greenspace exposure <span>may have a significant positive effect on certain aspects of mental health.</span></p> </span> </div></div><p>With Associate Geography Professor <a href="/geography/colleen-reid-0" rel="nofollow"><span>Colleen Reid</span></a> at the helm, researchers from the Geography, Psychology and Neuroscience departments as well as the Institute for Behavioral Genetics and the Institute of Behavioral Science explored the link between greenspace exposure and stress, anxiety and depression.</p><p>Their study revealed a strong association between perceived greenspace exposure and reduced anxiety. Could better mental health be as simple as a walk in the park? Perhaps, says lead study author and geography PhD candidate Emma Rieves.</p><p>The relationship between greenspace and mental health 鈥渋sn鈥檛 just about the greenspace that鈥檚 empirically there,鈥 which they measured by aggregating the green pixels, representing greenspace, from aerial imagery, also known as objective green space. 鈥淭he relationship is mainly influenced by aspects of green space that aren鈥檛 well captured by objective measures, such as the quality of the green space, how much time someone spends in green space and how accessible it is,鈥 she says.</p><p><strong>Research in the time of COVID-19</strong></p><p>Reid started the study in late 2019, says Rieves, who arrived on campus to begin her graduate education in the fall of 2020. 鈥淚t was weird,鈥 she recalls. 鈥淏ut the [geography] department did a lot to facilitate interactions between students despite the restrictions that were in place at the time.鈥</p><p>Even before Rieves dove into the research project, she had personal experience with nature鈥檚 capacity to ease her mind, particularly during the early days of lockdown. 鈥淏eing in nature definitely helped to combat some of the negative emotions you have when you鈥檙e stuck sitting in your house, doomscrolling and wiping down all your produce,鈥 she recalls.</p><p>To determine the effect of greenspace exposure on the study鈥檚 research subjects, the team had to switch gears early in the data-collection process to account for the extra stress associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, says Rieves.</p><p>Once COVID-19 public health restrictions were in place, however, they added pandemic-specific questions to their mental health survey so that subjects could share the extent to which they were impacted by stressors such finances, resources and the possibility of infection. (Photo: Josephine Baran/Unsplash)</span></p> </span> </div></div><p><strong>Is greenspace exposure a key to mental health?</strong></p><p>The researchers found that perceived greenspace exposure was directly linked to reduced anxiety metrics and had a borderline statistically significant relationship with lower levels of depression metrics. Meanwhile, objective greenspace exposure bore no statistically significant association with anxiety, depression or stress.</p><p>In other words, when it came to mental health, and anxiety in particular, objective greenspace exposure mattered far less than subjects鈥 perceptions of greenspace exposure.</p><p>鈥溾夿ased on the presence of green pixels, a vacant lot full of weeds would register as having a high green space signal. But if you were there, you might not perceive it as a superabundant green space,鈥 says Rieves. 鈥淲e found that other factors, like the quality of the environment in this example, is more important to the mental health and greenspace relationship.鈥</p><p>At the same time, the findings revealed a positive association between socioeconomic status and both objective and perceived greenspace, where people with higher socioeconomic status had higher perceived and objective greenspace exposure.</p><p><strong>The takeaway</strong></p><p>While no one is promising that a walk in the woods is a magic bullet, getting out in nature is never a bad idea, says Rieves. Reid</span> <div class="ucb-article-content ucb-striped-content"> <div class="container"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--article-content paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div class="ucb-article-text" itemprop="articleBody"> <div><p class="lead"><em>Wildfire smoke鈥檚 health risks can linger in homes that escape burning</em><span>鈥</span><em>as Colorado鈥檚 Marshall Fire survivors discovered</em></p><hr><p>On Dec. 30, 2021, a <a href="https://research.noaa.gov/looking-back-at-colorados-marshall-fire/" rel="nofollow">wind-driven wildfire</a> raced through two communities just outside 麻豆影院, Colorado. In the span of about eight hours, <a href="https://wildfiretoday.com/2022/01/07/marshall-fire-updated-damage-assessment-1084-residences-destroyed/" rel="nofollow">more than 1,000 homes</a> and businesses burned.</p><p>The fire left entire blocks in ash, but among them, <a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2022/01/04/marshall-fire-map-destroyed-damaged-homes-businesses/" rel="nofollow">pockets of houses survived</a>, seemingly untouched. The owners of these homes may have felt relief at first. But fire damage can be deceiving, as many soon discovered.</p><p>When wildfires like the Marshall Fire reach the <a href="https://theconversation.com/the-fastest-population-growth-in-the-wests-wildland-urban-interface-is-in-areas-most-vulnerable-to-wildfires-173410" rel="nofollow">wildland-urban interface</a>, they are burning both vegetation and human-made materials. The smoke and ash can blow under doors and around windows in nearby homes, bringing in chemicals that stick to walls and other indoor surfaces and continue off-gassing for weeks to months, particularly in warmer temperatures.</p><p>In a <a href="http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acsestair.4c00258" rel="nofollow">new study released three years after the Marshall Fire</a>, my colleagues and I looked at the health effects people experienced when they returned to still-standing homes. We also created a <a href="https://cires.colorado.edu/news/how-mitigate-post-fire-smoke-impacts-your-home" rel="nofollow">checklist for people to use after urban wildfires</a> in the future to help them protect their health and reduce their risks when they return to smoke-damaged homes.</p><p><strong>Tests in homes found elevated metals and VOCs</strong></p><p>In the days after the Marshall Fire, residents quickly reached out to nearby scientists who study wildfire smoke and health risks at the 麻豆影院 and area labs. People wanted to know what was in the ash and <a href="https://theconversation.com/homes-that-survived-the-marshall-fire-1-year-ago-harbored-another-disaster-inside-heres-what-weve-learned-about-this-insidious-urban-wildfire-risk-196926" rel="nofollow">causing the lingering smells inside their homes</a>.</p><p>In homes we were able to test, my colleagues found <a href="https://doi.org/10.1007/s11869-023-01376-3" rel="nofollow">elevated levels of metals and PAHs 鈥 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons 鈥 in the ash</a>. We also found elevated VOCs 鈥 volatile organic compounds 鈥 in airborne samples. Some VOCs, such as <a href="https://www.niehs.nih.gov/health/topics/agents/dioxins" rel="nofollow">dioxins</a>, <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/chemical-emergencies/chemical-fact-sheets/benzene.html" rel="nofollow">benzene</a>, <a href="https://wwwn.cdc.gov/tsp/substances/ToxSubstance.aspx?toxid=39" rel="nofollow">formaldehyde</a> and <a href="https://wwwn.cdc.gov/tsp/substances/ToxSubstance.aspx?toxid=25" rel="nofollow">PAHs</a>, can be toxic to humans. Benzene is a <a href="https://wwwn.cdc.gov/TSP/substances/ToxSubstance.aspx?toxid=14" rel="nofollow">known carcinogen</a>.</p><p>People wanted to know whether the chemicals that got into their homes that day could harm their health.</p><p>At the time, we could find no information about physical health implications for people who have returned to smoke-damaged homes after a wildfire. To look for patterns, we <a href="https://www.marshallresilience.com/survey" rel="nofollow">surveyed residents</a> affected by the fire six months, one year and two years afterward.</p><p><strong>Symptoms six months after the fire</strong></p><p>Even six months after the fire, we found that <a href="http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acsestair.4c00258" rel="nofollow">many people were reporting symptoms</a> that aligned with health risks related to smoke and ash from fires.</p><p>More than half (55%) of the people who responded to our survey reported that they were experiencing at least one symptom six months after the blaze that they attributed to the Marshall Fire. The most common symptoms reported were itchy or watery eyes (33%), headache (30%), dry cough (27%), sneezing (26%) and sore throat (23%).</p><p>All of these symptoms, as well as having a strange taste in one鈥檚 mouth, were associated with people reporting that their home smelled differently when they returned to it one week after the fire.</p><p>Many survey respondents said that the smells decreased over time. Most attributed the improvement in smell to the passage of time, cleaning surfaces and air ducts, replacing furnace filters, and removing carpet, textiles and furniture from the home. Despite this, many still had symptoms.</p><p>We found that living near a large number of burned structures was associated with these health symptoms. For every 10 additional destroyed buildings within 820 feet (250 meters) of a person鈥檚 home, there was a 21% increase in headaches and a 26% increase in having a strange taste in their mouth.</p><p>These symptoms align with what could be expected from exposure to the chemicals that we found in the ash and measured in the air inside the few <a href="https://theconversation.com/homes-that-survived-the-marshall-fire-1-year-ago-harbored-another-disaster-inside-heres-what-weve-learned-about-this-insidious-urban-wildfire-risk-196926" rel="nofollow">smoke-damaged homes that we were able to study</a> in depth.</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-xlarge"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><p>&nbsp;</p> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2025-01/Marshall%20Fire%20overview.jpg?itok=0koDXMc6" width="1500" height="1000" alt="burned neighborhood in Louisville, Colorado, after Marshall Fire"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text"><span>The Marshall Fire swept through several neighborhoods in Louisville and Superior, Colorado. (Photo: Michael Ciaglo/Getty Images)</span></p> </span> </div></div><p><strong>Lingering symptoms and questions</strong></p><p>There are a still a lot of unanswered questions about the health risks from smoke- and ash-damaged homes.</p><p>For example, we don鈥檛 yet know what long-term health implications might look like for people living with lingering gases from wildfire smoke and ash in a home.</p><p>We found a significant <a href="http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acsestair.4c00258" rel="nofollow">decline in the number of people</a> reporting symptoms one year after the fire. However, 33% percent of the people whose homes were affected still reported at least one symptom that they attributed to the fire. 麻豆影院 the same percentage also reported at least one symptom two years after the fire.</p><p>We also could not measure the level of VOCs or metals that each person was exposed to. But we do think that reports of a change in the smell of a person鈥檚 home one week after the fire demonstrates the likely presence of VOCs in the home. That has health implications for people whose homes are exposed to smoke or ash from a wildfire.</p><p><strong>Tips to protect yourself after future wildfires</strong></p><p>Wildfires are <a href="https://par.nsf.gov/biblio/10442427" rel="nofollow">increasingly burning homes and other structures</a> as <a href="https://theconversation.com/human-exposure-to-wildfires-has-more-than-doubled-in-two-decades-who-is-at-risk-might-surprise-you-207903" rel="nofollow">more people move into</a> the wildland-urban interface, <a href="https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2213815120" rel="nofollow">temperatures rise</a> and fire seasons lengthen.</p><p>It can be confusing to know what to do if your home is one that survives a wildfire nearby. To help, my colleagues and I put together a <a href="https://cires.colorado.edu/news/how-mitigate-post-fire-smoke-impacts-your-home" rel="nofollow">website of steps to take</a> if your home is ever infiltrated by smoke or ash from a wildfire.</p><p>Here are a few of those steps:</p><ul><li>When you鈥檙e ready to clean your home, start by protecting yourself. Wear at least an N95 (or KN95) mask and gloves, goggles and clothing that covers your skin.</li><li>Vacuum floors, drapes and furniture. But avoid harsh chemical cleaners because they can react with the chemicals in the ash.</li><li>Clean your HVAC filter and ducts to avoid spreading ash further. Portable air cleaners with carbon filters can help remove VOCs.</li></ul><p><a href="https://doi.org/10.1126/sciadv.adh8263" rel="nofollow">A recent scientific study</a> documents how <a href="https://theconversation.com/wildfire-smoke-leaves-harmful-gases-in-floors-and-walls-air-purifiers-arent-enough-new-study-shows-but-you-can-clean-it-up-214060" rel="nofollow">cleaning all surfaces</a> within a home can reduce reservoirs of VOCs and lower indoor air concentrations of VOCs.</p><p>Given that we don鈥檛 know much yet about the health harms of smoke- and ash-damaged homes, it is important to take care in how you clean so you can do the most to protect your health.</p><hr><p><a href="/lab/damrauergroup/arindam-sau" rel="nofollow"><em><span>Colleen E.
