Buffs Backyard Orchard Breaks Ground

The CUSG Environmental Board awarded a $90,000 Sustainable CU grant to fund the Buffs Backyard Orchard project.ÌýThe project broke ground in early September. This sustainable orchard will transform the 30th Street Greenhouse’s turfgrass into a vibrant permaculture habitat, offering a dynamic space for the CU Âé¶¹Ó°Ôº community and beyond to enjoy.
Located south of Âé¶¹Ó°Ôº Creek, the orchard will prioritize soil health by using native species, compost, and natural mulches to restore ecosystems without relying on chemical fertilizers or pesticides. The space will serve as an outdoor classroom, a relaxation spot, and a food source for theÌýBuff Pantry, which provides free groceries to CU students facing food insecurity.
The orchard’s design will feature up to 30 trees, many of which will be grown from grafts of historic apple varieties unique to Âé¶¹Ó°Ôº. Understory plantings will support pollinators and boost biodiversity, contributing to a healthy, thriving ecosystem. The Buffs Backyard Orchard will also help CU Âé¶¹Ó°Ôº maintain its Tree Campus USA status, engaging students with tree care and stewardship.

The Buffs Backyard Orchard aims to educate students across a variety of disciplines—Ecology, Environmental Studies, History, Art, and more—while providing hands-on learning opportunities about ecosystems, permaculture, and nature-based design. With accessible pathways for all and connections to CU’s sustainability efforts, the orchard will foster a sense of community and well-being, bringing people together in a shared mission to care for the environment.
