With the academic year quickly approaching, Colorado Law is looking forward to welcoming the incoming class of new students. Over the next few weeks, we will be highlighting some of our incredible 1Ls through a series of brief profiles! First up, we have Alina Acosta.Ìý

Originally from Elmhurst, IL, Alina attended Harvard for anÌýundergraduate degree in engineering and a master's degree in education. She then spent 6 years teaching math in Denver Public Schools at Manual High School and AUL Denver, and the last several years teachingÌýat St. George's British International School in Munich, Germany.Ìý

Meet the Class of 2029’s Alina Acosta!ÌýÌý

What inspired you to pursue a law degree?ÌýÌý

AA: After years working with kids and families both in public schools in Denver and abroad, I've seen the strain involvementÌýin the justice system can have on kids in the classroom as well as ways that legal knowledge can be used to support children and families. I'm hoping to use my law degree along with my background in education to be a resource, advocate, and support for kids and families with whatever difficulty they may be facing.Ìý

What are your hobbies outside of work and school?ÌýÌý

AA: Outside of work, I enjoy running, riding my bike, playing the viola, sketching, and playing roller derby.Ìý

Why did you choose Colorado law?ÌýÌý

AA: I picked Colorado law for a few reasons. Geographically, Colorado is a place that I care about--I already felt connected to local communities here having worked in Denver, and it's where my husband and I met! Academically, Colorado law's Juvenile and Family Law Program is perfectlyÌýaligned with the type of work I'm interested in. The intentional cohort model, and engaged professors were also important to me in choosing CU. And personally, ending my Colorado law tour onÌýthe patio of the Wolf Law Building looking at the flatirons really solidified that this was a school where I could see myself.Ìý

What are you most looking forward to this upcoming academic year?ÌýÌý

AA: Getting back into the student seat! I'm looking forward to meeting my classmates and professors, devoting time to building up the language of the law, being challenged in a new way, and using these new skills to support local communities.ÌýÌý
