Roommate Selection Process

Our housing is based on Living Experiences, which may limit the roommate experience as students will have to choose which is more important, mutual roommate or living experience (hall choice). We understand that for some students a roommate is most important. We have several options to select a roommate. Additionally, while University Housing will do its best to honor mutual roommate requests, we cannot guarantee that you will be placed together.Ìý

Due to the requirements of Engineering, Integrated Business & Engineering, Pre-Business and Environmental Design, students accepted to these colleges or assigned to Weber Hall Break housing have specific living requirements and will only be able to participate in Option 2 or 3.Ìý

Option 1 - Mutual Roommate Request

Students who have a roommate in mind prior to May 4* can indicate that preference in the housing application. Students who choose this option are prioritizing their roommate above living experience options. Students who choose this option will get an email with instructions to go back into the application May 5 – 11 and choose their roommate. Students who select this option will not provide hall preferences and roommates will be assigned to a Traditional style hall in a double, community bath room. If you, or the intended roommate, do not fulfill the instructions for this option, the building assignment will still be a Traditional style hall, and you will be eligible for Option 2.Ìý

Students who want to prioritize their living experience will have an opportunity to participate in a roommate selection process after they receive their building assignments where they can meet and match with other residents assigned to the same hall and room type (Option 2).Ìý

*This priority deadline can be moved earlier with little to no notice.Ìý

Option 2 - Roommate Selection

After students receive their building assignment, they can utilize the MyCULiving portal during select dates below to view and choose a mutual roommate who is assigned to their same building and double, community bath room type. If students have a specific roommate prior to these dates, they will use this process to select each other. Students assigned to specialty rooms will not have access to this process; however, if they find a roommate through other methods (social media, orientation, etc.) they can follow the additional option below.Ìý

For students assigned to a double, community bath room typeÌý

  • The roommate request process will begin on June 9; a building-by-building schedule is provided below. This is the timeframe that you can go into the MyCULiving Portal and select your roommate.*
    • Dates, times and halls will be updated in March 2026
  • If you do not request a roommate within your date window, you will be placed with a roommate or roommates whose living preferences are similar to those you submitted in the housing application (Option 3).
  • Please note: we are not able to guarantee that all roommate requests will be accommodated. Roommate information will be provided in the final housing assignment that will be posted in the MyCULiving Portal at the end of the day on July 13, 14 and 15.Ìý

For students assigned to a special room type (apartments, roommates and attached bath, or triple or quad with community bath)ÌýÌý

If you have identified a roommate you would like to live with who has been assigned to your same building and room type:Ìý

  • You and your identified roommate should both email universityhousing@colorado.edu requesting to live with each other. Emails will be accepted June 9 - 30 at 11:59 p.m. MT.
  • You must complete this within the date window, otherwise you will be placed with a roommate(s) whose living preferences are similar to those you submitted in the housing application (Option 3).
  • Some of our special room types are unique, with only one or two of these rooms in a building. Therefore, not all special room types are eligible to participate in the roommate selection process. Please reach out to University Housing if you have a question about your eligibility.
  • Please note: we are not able to guarantee that all roommate requests will be accommodated. Roommate information will be provided in the final housing assignment that will be posted in the MyCULiving Portal at the end of the day on July 13, 14 and 15.Ìý

Option 3 - Roommate assigned by University Housing

Students who do not participate in Options 1 or 2, or miss the deadlines, will have their roommates assigned to them whose living preferences are similar to those you submitted in the housing application.

Roommate information will be provided in the final housing assignment that will be posted in the MyCULiving Portal at the end of the day on July 13, 14 and 15.
