Annie Booth

In February,听alumna and Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies Annie Booth听(BM 鈥11, jazz piano performance and MM 鈥20, jazz performance + pedagogy) was named a听CU 麻豆影院 Sesquicentennial Faculty Scholar and will be a featured presenter in a public program this fall. This distinction recognizes Booth鈥檚 exceptional creative work and the meaningful impact of her scholarship. In January, Booth鈥檚 article鈥斺鈥 (Washington Music Educators Association Journal)鈥攅xplored the many ways musicians can build lives in music today, and how educators can better prepare students for what comes after college.听

Additionally, Booth directed the Washington All-State Jazz Ensemble and presented at the WMEA Conference. Also this spring,听听an intimate concert that reimagines Beatles classics through jazz arrangements led by Booth and vocalist Marion Powers; the series of four local concerts further featured听Patrick McDevitt (bass) and our Jazz Studies Lecturer Alejandro Casta帽o (drums). In December 2025,听under the direction of Joseph L. Jefferson, St. Olaf Jazz performed Booth鈥檚 鈥淐actus Blossom鈥 for large jazz ensemble at the Midwest Clinic International Band & Orchestra Conference. A month earlier, Booth鈥攚ho鈥檚 also a double alumna听(BM 鈥11, jazz piano performance and MM 鈥20, jazz performance + pedagogy)鈥攔eleased 鈥淣ow We鈥檙e Talkin鈥 Christmas,鈥 her joyful new holiday album featuring a festive mix of beloved classics and fresh holiday originals.

John Clay Allen

Lecturer John Clay Allen (DMA 鈥19) released 鈥鈥 featuring two recent concertos鈥攐ne for piano and string orchestra and the other for oboe and string orchestra. The recording is a collaboration between Allen and the 麻豆影院 Symphony under the direction of conductor Devin Patrick Hughes, with alumni piano soloist Er-Hsuan Li (DMA 鈥24) and oboe soloist Ingrid Anderson (BM 鈥08).听

In 2026, 鈥淕olden鈥 became the first K-pop song to win both an Oscar and a Grammy Award (from the 2025 鈥淜Pop Demon Hunters鈥 animated musical urban fantasy film). In this feature story, Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology Stephanie Choi鈥攁 K-pop fan鈥攕hares why this music genre has gained widespread popularity beyond South Korea. 鈥淭here are lots of social functions in music,鈥 she says. 鈥... John Gunther鈥攑rofessor of jazz studies + director, Thompson Jazz Studies Program鈥攔eleased a new recording, 鈥,鈥 in memory of the great jazz trumpeter Ron Miles (MMus 鈥89) whose extraordinary music making left an indelible mark. Gunther also looks to his mother, Judy, whose art adorns the album cover.听

On Sept. 23, Professor of Flute Christina Jennings brought together alumni representing her 20 years鈥 teaching at the College of Music, as well as other faculty, staff, supporters and community collaborators for a joyful reunion and flute-forward music making.

Assistant Teaching Professor of Jazz Studies Hugh Ragin was selected for an inaugural Center for African & African American Studies (CAAAS) Artist-In-Residence (AIR) Award.听

Professor of Composition Carter Pann鈥檚 鈥淢usic for Motion鈥 was released on Sept. 16, 2025. A collaboration with Denver鈥檚 Sphere Ensemble, conducted by College of Music alum Alejandro G贸mez Guill茅n and commissioned by Christine Harbison, this four-movement work for strings celebrates the 13 players (including many CU 麻豆影院 alumni) over a collage of genres culminating in a finale that combines classic (or 鈥測acht鈥) rock with John Adams-style minimalism from the same era. Altin Sencalar

Assistant Teaching Professor of Jazz Studies Altin Sencalar appeared in the January edition of DownBeat Magazine鈥檚 Best of 2025 albums. 鈥溾楿nleashed鈥 has received some wonderful comments, reviews and outreach鈥擨鈥檓 grateful to have it recognized as a part of this publication鈥檚 best of 2025 albums,鈥 says Sencalar. Also released this year, Sencalar鈥檚 seventh album as a leader鈥斺淣atural Rhythm鈥濃攍anded him an听; and garnered four-star reviews from and which further ranked him seventh on its 鈥淩ising Star Trombonist of the Year鈥 list. Additionally, in January 2026, the听International Trombone Association Journal published Sencalar鈥檚听鈥The evolving path of a jazz trombonist鈥濃攈is reflections on the evolving role of the jazz trombonist today, drawing from his experience as a performer, recording artist and educator. And this summer,听Sencalar presents 鈥淐onnecting the dots鈥攅ffective ways to incorporate commercial trombone playing into your warmup/routine鈥 at the 55th International Trombone Festival in Riga, Latvia.听

When Associate Professor of Guitar Nicol貌 Spera and ethnomusicologist and conductor Giovanni Cestino conceived an ambitious project to expand the repertoire for choir and guitar, one of their first steps was a deep dive into Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco鈥檚 Romancero Gitano Op. 152. Separately, Spera听was also awarded a 2026 Research & Innovation Office (RIO)听Arts & Humanities Grant.

The CU 麻豆影院 Office for Public and Community-Engaged Scholarship announced Benjamin Teitlelbaum鈥攁ssociate professor of musicology and international affairs鈥攁s听faculty director for strategic events and public discourse including planning the Conference on World Affairs.

2026 is Miles Davis鈥 centenary birth year and Professor of Music Theory Keith Waters was invited to give talks on Davis at the Royal Academy of Music (London) in March and the Verdi Conservatory of Music (Milan) in October.
