Families may also find it helpful to know that fraternities in �鶹ӰԺ are not all structured the same way.��

In �鶹ӰԺ, there are both university-affiliated fraternities and unaffiliated fraternities that operate independently from CU �鶹ӰԺ. Understanding the difference can help your student make an informed decision about where they want to build community and find a sense of belonging.��

CU �鶹ӰԺ encourages students who are interested in fraternity life to join an affiliated fraternity because these organizations are connected to the university and supported through Fraternity & Sorority Life.��

What does “affiliated” mean?��

University-affiliated fraternities are officially designated as recognized Greek student organizations (RGSOs) and are members of the CU Interfraternity Council (CUIFC). These organizations agree to follow university policies and expectations designed to support student success, leadership and well-being.��

Some fraternities in the �鶹ӰԺ community have chosen not to affiliate with the university or are no longer recognized. These organizations operate independently and are not overseen by CU �鶹ӰԺ.��

While students are free to make their own decisions about joining organizations, affiliated fraternities provide students with the benefits of university advising, education and support.��

Families play an important role in helping students ask thoughtful questions before joining any organization.��

Encourage your student to learn about a chapter’s values, expectations and membership experience. If they’re interested in fraternity life, attending the university’s fall recruitment process is the best way to meet members of affiliated fraternities, ask questions and determine which chapter feels like the right fit.��

Choosing an affiliated fraternity also helps ensure your student is joining an organization that works closely with the university to support student well-being and leadership development.��

Health, safety and hazing prevention��

Creating a safe and healthy fraternity experience is a shared responsibility.��

Because unaffiliated fraternities are not connected to the university, they do not participate in many of the education programs, prevention initiatives and ongoing support available to affiliated chapters.��

CU �鶹ӰԺ is committed to preventing hazing and encourages all students, families and community members to learn how to recognize concerning behaviors and report hazing if they see or experience it.��

If you’re concerned about changes in your student’s behavior or believe they may have experienced hazing or another harmful situation, encourage them to seek support. Families can also report concerns to Student Conduct & Conflict Resolution, so the university can help connect students with appropriate resources.��
